 2012 Competition Event Highlights
International fine Art Photography Award
Grand Prix de la Decouverte

Announcing Grand Prix de la Découverte Winners!

The International Fine Art Photography Program is pleased to announce the 2012 Grand Prix de la Découverte winners and to share the highlights of all the November 2012 events.

Congratulations to Javier Arcenillas of Spain and Jeremy Scott of the United States---  2012 Grand Prix de la Découverte Award Winners. The jurors had two very different and very powerful selections as their final choice. Rather than lock the jury in a room until a decision was made, The de Groot Foundation generously honored both selections. Et voilà ... two Grand Prix winners.

Javier won for his image "Red Note" in the Street Photography/Documentary category. The Red Note is the accident and crime report that newspapers in Guatemala receive daily. Javier followed the trail of these alerts to tell the story of this growing violence. "These problems cannot be solved with a camera," Javier says. "My role is to tell the story ... to show the truth."

Jeremy won for his image "Woman Carrying Fish" in the People/Portraits category. He calls his work "paintings from the imagination---  a timeless place between reality and a dream."

"If someone can't stop looking at a photo of mine, it is truly the ultimate compliment," Jeremy says. "I can't think of a better reason to continue taking pictures."

Award Winners in Paris!
The Grand Prix award winners were present at the awards ceremony in Paris, and 23 other award winners from 11 countries joined them for the events of the week, including a presentation at The American Library in Paris, a private reception for the photographers with sparkling Eiffel Tower view, and the vernissage of the exhibit, attended by more than 3,000 opening-night visitors.

The Highlights:
  • A creative group and gracious spirit of community, with 25 visiting photographers from 11 countries (including France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Greece, the U.S., Kuwait, Chile, and Australia)
  • An exceptional exhibit of quality work. For this, we thank the photographers as well as the jurors for their discerning selections (Jane Evelyn Atwood, Julie Grahame, Michael Kenna, Jean-Claude Lemagny, Alexandre Percy, and David Travis).
  • 8,000 visitors to the exhibit, including collectors, gallerists, photographers, and photography lovers (3,000 on opening night!)
  • Photo sales (including 18-year old Tana Foster's first photography sale ... the beginning, we hope, of a brilliant career).
  • A sold-out exhibit catalog (3rd printing in progress).
  • Submission of the work to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (with article featured in the BnF Chroniques magazine in 2013).
  • Upcoming articles in several photography journals.
